What to wear for a Dolomites Photoshoot

If you’re dreaming of acouple or engagement photoshoot in the Dolomites, chances are you’re already picturing alpine lakes, golden trees, or dramatic mountain views. But once you’ve chosen the location, there’s a question I hear all the time: “What to wear for a Dolomites Photoshoot?”

Let’s be honest, planning your outfit in the mountains isn’t just about looking good on camera. It’s also about feeling comfortable and free to enjoy the moment. Whether we’re meeting at sunrise by an alpine lake or heading out on a longer hike, what you wear will shape your experience (and your photos!).

Here’s what to keep in mind when choosing what to wear for a Dolomites photoshoot.

What to wear for a Dolomites Photoshoot: winter outfit idea

Mountain Weather = Layers Are Your Best Friend

Even in summer, early mornings in the Dolomites can be chilly, we’re still in the Alps, after all. The temperature often drops to single digits at dawn, especially near lakes or higher elevations. You might start the session wrapped in a puffer jacket and end it in short sleeves when the sun hits.

Layering gives you flexibility, warmth, and adds movement and texture to the photos. Think:

  • Cozy knit sweaters
  • Neutral or earthy-colored scarves
  • Soft jackets or cardigans
  • A wool coat in autumn or a structured trench in spring

If you love a more styled look, you can always wear a beautiful outfit underneath and remove outer layers during the shoot, just keep in mind we’ll be outdoors.

Style vs Function, You Can Have Both

Let’s get real: the Dolomites are stunning, but they’re also wild and rugged. This is not the place for heels or delicate fabrics unless we’re shooting in a more urban or chic location like Cortina d’Ampezzo, where the vibe is a bit more luxury-alpine (think stylish cafés, beautiful hotels, and mountain views with easier access).

But if your shoot is deeper in nature, it’s best to embrace practical clothing. That doesn’t mean compromising on style, you can still look amazing in:

  • Hiking boots in natural tones
  • Matching beanies or gloves in winter
  • Stylish outdoor jackets in muted, complementary colors

Try to avoid bright neon sport gear unless it’s very you. Instead, earthy tones, warm neutrals, forest green, rust, cream, or dusty blue tend to blend beautifully with the landscape.

How Far Are We Walking?

This makes a big difference.
If we’re doing a short walk (like 5 minutes from the parking lot), you can bring a change of shoes, or a warmer coat to wear between shots. But if we’re going for a real hike, then your outfit should be something you can move in easily, comfortable, breathable, and layered.

Even in accessible spots, heels or slippery shoes are a no-go, especially in winter when paths can be icy. I’ve slipped more than once myself!

If you’re unsure, I always encourage my couples to ask: as a local photographer, I know which spots are easy to reach and which ones require a bit of adventure.

Outfits That Work Well for Photos

You don’t need to match perfectly, actually, it’s better if you don’t. Instead:

  • Pick 2–3 complementary colors and build your outfits around them
  • Mix textures like wool, cotton, and linen (not too much black!)
  • Avoid logos, busy prints, or anything too stiff
  • Bring a few accessories for variety: scarf, jacket, hat

And most importantly? Wear something that feels like you. These photos are about your connection, not about having the perfect magazine-style outfit.
