When Conor reached out to me to plan a surprise proposal photoshoot in Bergamo, my hometown, I was so excited. I may live in Venice now, but Bergamo is where I was born and raised, and it will always have a special place in my heart.
Bergamo is one of those cities that many international travelers still overlook, and that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s a hidden gem in Northern Italy, just about 50 km from Milan. Unlike the crowded tourist hotspots, Bergamo offers a quiet, authentic atmosphere, perfect for anyone looking for a romantic photoshoot, a surprise proposal, or even an elopement off the beaten path.
Conor had lived in Bergamo during university, and Wyndham had come to visit him there, marking their first international trip together. Returning to this city now felt like coming full circle, and choosing it for the proposal made it even more special.
We wandered through the charming streets of Città Alta, Bergamo’s historic old town perched above the rest of the city. With its cobblestone alleys, warm-toned architecture, and sweeping views over the valley below, it’s hard not to fall in love with the place.
Bergamo’s Città Alta is encircled by massive Venetian walls, built in the 16th century when the city was under the rule of the Republic of Venice. These walls, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still define the character of the upper city today. We stopped at Porta San Giacomo, one of the most iconic gates in the walls, with an incredible view over Città Bassa (the lower city). It was here, with the city stretching out behind them, that Conor knelt down and proposed.

After the big moment, we walked some more, soaked in the quiet energy of the city, and ended with a coffee together. It was simple, emotional, and intimate, the way proposals should be.
This photoshoot in Bergamo felt more like a morning walk with friends than a formal photoshoot. That’s how I love to work: giving space for real moments to happen, while quietly capturing the emotion and connection.
