Wendy and Chris had already shared a photoshoot with me in Venice some time ago. So when they contacted me again for something even more intimate, I was beyond honored. This time, they were planning a mountain elopement in Switzerland, just the two of them, surrounded by the quiet majesty of the Alps.
They were traveling all the way from the U.S. and while their dream was to elope in the mountains, they didn’t want to deal with complicated logistics or extreme hiking. After narrowing it down to a couple of alpine trails, we landed on the Gratwanderweg Stoos (Klingenstock–Fronalpstock), a panoramic ridge trail in central Switzerland, known for its breathtaking views over the lake.

A Slow Morning with Meaning before the Elopement
On the day of their mountain elopement in Switzerland, I joined them at their cozy Airbnb. The mood was quiet, with a soft light filtering through the windows. They were packing their backpacks with everything they needed: their elopement outfits, handfasting ribbon, vows still to be written, some snacks, and a bottle of wine to celebrate later.
They sat down at the table and took a few peaceful moments to write their personal notes. It was such an intimate gesture just the two of them, surrounded by silence and anticipation, pouring their feelings into words. These are the kinds of moments that make being an elopement photographer so special.
The hike for their Mountain Elopement in Switzerland
After everything had been packed, we boarded the Stoos funicular, one of the steepest in the world, which carried us up to the car-free village of Stoos. From there, a cable car took us even higher, to the starting point of the Gratwanderweg.
Our plan was to hike the ridge until we found the perfect spot for the ceremony, ideally somewhere panoramic and private. But as soon as we reached the top, we were greeted by thick, unexpected fog, even if it was a warm August day. We kept walking, hoping the mist would lift. After an hour and a half of hiking, it became clear: the views weren’t coming back.
We made the call to descend. Spirits were low even if they were still happy to be there. Eloping in the alps means surrendering a little control: nature has its own timing, and it’s definitely one thing you can’t control.
A heartfelt ceremony despite the foggy day
Back near Stoos the fog lifted and we stumbled across a quiet corner with a view over the valley. The light was soft and moody, no sunshine still, but it was a different kind of magic. After a short break and some food, Wendy and Chris changed into their wedding outfits and stood together, ready to say their vows.
The vows they had written that same morning now came to life in front of the mountains, between smiles and tears. They included a handfasting ritual, tying a knot with a ribbon, symbolizing their connection. The fog, the silence, the stillness… It all made the moment more emotional, not less. I stayed at a distance with a long lens, giving them privacy while capturing every tear, every glance. This mountain elopement in Switzerland was definitely one of my favorites works of 2025.
It wasn’t the grand alpine panorama from the crest we had imagined. But it was still beautiful but most importantly it was real, raw, and unforgettable, exactly what a mountain elopement in Switzerland should be about.
A Toast to Imperfection
After the ceremony, they shared a simple picnic in the mountains, complete with wine and a tiny cake they had brought along. We took some final portraits as the light began to fade, and then made our way back down to the village, tired but full of emotion.
There’s a lesson here: your elopement day doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t need perfect weather or a postcard view. What matters is that you’re present, together, doing this for yourselves.
Planning Your Own Mountain Elopement in Switzerland
As a photographer who works throughout Italy and Europe, I love helping couples create meaningful experiences in nature, whether it’s an elopement in the Dolomites, the Amalfi Coast, or the Swiss Alps.
If you’re dreaming of a destination elopement in Europe, Switzerland is a breathtaking option that often goes overlooked. It offers epic views, peaceful trails, and a quiet atmosphere. You don’t need a crowd to make your day special just intention, connection, and a bit of courage to embrace the unknown.
Wendy and Chris, thank you for trusting me again and reminding me that sometimes, the most beautiful stories are the ones we don’t plan for.
