If you’re dreaming of a Dolomites Elopement that’s personal, scenic, and truly peaceful, the key is knowing when and how to make it happen. The Dolomites are one of Italy’s most breathtaking regions, but also one of the most photographed. Places like Lake Braies have gained massive popularity in recent years, and while the views are absolutely worth it, the crowds can quickly shift the energy from intimate to overwhelming.
That’s why Karolina and Shay’s decision to plan their session in early May made all the difference. Their timing gave us a calm, quiet setting that felt like it belonged to them and their elopement-style photoshoot turned into a meaningful and beautiful experience.

Why Lake Braies Is Still Worth It for your Dolomites Elopement (If You Plan It Smart)
Lake Braies (also known as Pragser Wildsee) is famous for a reason. Surrounded by steep mountain cliffs and still reflections, it’s like something out of a painting. But between June and September, it can get extremely busy starting from early morning. Karolina and Shay opted for a sunrise session in May, which meant cooler temperatures but total peace.
We started shooting before the sun hit the surface of the water. The air was crisp, and the lake was completely still. No crowds, no chaos: just the two of them and the soft sounds of nature. We took portraits on the wooden dock and rowed into the lake with no one around. Honestly? It felt like a dream.
If you’re considering a Dolomites Elopement, this is one of the most important tips: plan for shoulder season, wake up early, and bring warm layers. Even in May, the temperature was low, Karolina and Shay wore jackets between shots, and it helped keep the experience comfortable and enjoyable.

Booking the Boathouse: A Worthwhile Decision
Karolina and Shay were quick to act when the boathouse at Lake Braies (La Palafitta) opened its bookings early in the year. They secured the palafitta for 90 minutes, just enough time for a quiet moment, some gorgeous photos, and a boat ride with no one rushing us.
We had two rowboats and the entire dock area to ourselves, which allowed them to move freely and enjoy the moment. It was incredibly special, and I can’t stress enough how much this kind of private access adds to the overall experience of your Dolomites elopement. If you’re planning a session like this, make sure to check the official site for booking windows and availability.

A meaningful Dolomites Elopement at sunrise
This wasn’t a wedding with guests or a ceremony with speeches, this was something quieter, more reflective. After we captured all the moments around the lake, Karolina and Shay exchanged personal vows in private, just the two of them, once my sister (she was there to help me that day!) and I gave them some space. It was quiet, emotional, and deeply meaningful.
Their Dolomites elopement photoshoot wasn’t overly styled or scripted, it was about presence, connection, and a location that felt larger than life yet completely theirs for that moment.

An LGBTQ+ Elopement in one of Italy’s most iconic locations
Karolina and Shay’s love story was a beautiful reminder that there’s no single way to elope. For couples planning a lgbtq+ Elopement in Italy, places like Lake Braies offer the chance to create something both stunning and deeply personal, far from the pressure of tradition or expectations.
This wasn’t just a shoot with a pretty backdrop. It was a real moment between two people choosing to celebrate their love in a way that reflected who they are. And to witness that, in the quiet morning light of the Dolomites, was nothing short of inspiring.
